Travel Advisory: Overnight Closures to Begin Tuesday Night, October 13 for Steel Placement at the Bald Hill Road Bridge in Warwick

Starting Tuesday night, October 13, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is scheduled to begin a series of overnight closures of Route 2 (Bald Hill Road) at the Bald Hill Road Bridge for steel placement. The bridge, which carries I-295 over Route 2 in Warwick, is located between the Warwick Mall and Midland Commons shopping centers.

The road will be closed nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. for approximately two weeks. The closures are scheduled Tuesday-Thursday nights, October 13-15 and Sunday-Tuesday nights, October 18-20. During these times, Route 2 will be closed between East Avenue and West Natick Road. Local traffic will be permitted. Motorists are advised to follow the signed detours. They include:

• Route 2 North: Take a right onto Route 113 (East Avenue), a left onto Route 5 (Greenwich Avenue), a left onto West Natick Road and then back to Route 2.

• Route 2 South: Take a left onto West Natick Road, a right onto Greenwich Avenue, a right onto East Avenue and then back to Route 2.

The closure also will affect I-295. The left lane on I-295 South after Exit 1B (Route 2 South) will be closed. Additionally, the on-ramps to I-295 North and South from Route 2 will be closed. The following detours will provide access during ramp closures:

• To access I-295 North from Route 2: Take a right onto East Avenue, use the on-ramp to I-95 North, then take Route 37 West to access I-295 North.

• To access I-295 South, for I-95 South, from Route 2: Take a left onto West Natick Road, a right onto Greenwich Avenue, a right onto East Avenue and then use the ramp to I-95 South.

This work is part of a multi-bridge project that is addressing six bridges along this section of I-295 in Warwick. RIDOT also will demolish and replace two bridges over West Natick Road using accelerated bridge construction methods. All bridges within this project were built in the late 1960s. They carry 48,000 vehicles per day. The entire $76.6 million project will be done in summer 2028.

All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.
