2nd CPTS Behind the Numbers

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. – When people picture Barksdale Air Force Base, their minds often go straight to the B-52H Stratofortress soaring through the skies. But behind the 2nd Bomb Wing mission, a team of Airmen are ensuring the resources needed to accomplish the bomber mission are accounted for and in place.

The 2nd Comptroller Squadron plays a key role in that effort, helping units across the installation make informed decisions on training, travel, equipment and budgets while supporting 37 geographically separated units.

“We handle all financial items from permanent change of station travel, temporary duty and deployment travel, all military and civilian payroll items and funding across the installation,” said Master Sgt. Angela Wilkerson, 2nd CPTS financial operations flight chief. “Our unit consists of four sections making all these things happen every day.”

Serving as a financial hub for the installation, the job involves more than numbers on a spreadsheet. Comptrollers work with units throughout the base to answer questions, provide financial guidance and help leaders understand the resources available to them.

This guidance requires a balance between supporting the needs of individual units and ensuring resources are used responsibly. A balanced effort means meeting the needs of individual units with the expertise of displaying professional stewardship.

Their team’s attention to detail and understanding of financial processes allows commanders and Airmen to focus on their missions while knowing the resources supporting those missions are being properly managed. This is executed all while maintaining strong morale within their unit.

“We all mesh extremely well, which has helped build trust and increase our team productivity,” said Wilkerson. “I truly love this group of teammates and getting to know them professionally and personally.”

The squadron's work provides Airmen with the opportunity to interact with nearly every part of the installation. Those relationships help the team better understand the different challenges organizations face and how financial support fits into so many daily operations and mission readiness.

“One of the best parts about this profession is that unique feeling of being so helpful to team members and ensuring they feel better about their military finances,” said Airman 1st Class Kelby Woods, 2nd CPTS financial operations technician. “Our squadron is highly impactful in that field, completing tasks that stand out at high levels.”

By managing resources, maintaining accountability and supporting the readiness of various units, the Airmen of the 2nd CPTS help ensure the mission has the resources it needs when the nation calls.
